Sir Trevor here to remember ‘Tom Finney the person’

Former England international Sir Trevor Brooking, director of football development at the FA, hailed Sir Tom Finney as a true gentleman and said he was attending the funeral to pay respects to ‘Tom the person’ not just the footballer.

He said: “I think two memories really. One, obviously, you have Tom as a player and a young primary school lad in the 1950’s who would have seen him play in black and white on the BBC, and his exploits with Billy Wright and Stan Mathews in an England shirt.

“More importantly, in the last 20-25 years, I have been involved in sports council work and funding and that way I met Tom as a person. I think anyone who will have met him will tell you that having spent time with him as a person is why we all respect and admire him, he was such an unassuming individual. Most people are here to remember the person.

“I’m here in an FA role, but I’d have been here irrespective of that.”
