Sir Tom signs fan's special scooter

Sir Tom Finney took a few defenders for a ride during his North End days ... now one lifelong fan's creation is helping keep the old "flying winger" spirit alive.

PNE season ticket holder John Billington rode up to the Evening Post offices on this customised Sir Tom Finney scooter to pick up a copy of the paper this week – not realising his idol was inside.

Sir Tom was signing copies of the Lancashire Evening Post's new "life in pictures" book at the Evening Post offices when John's 1971 Lambretta stopped him in his tracks.

And a stunned Sir Tom made John's day by adding his prized autograph to the spectacular machine.

John, 48, from Fulwood, said: "I was going to take it up to the club when he was signing his book, I had no idea he'd be here.

"This was just my tribute to him. I have had some funny looks from people.

"I call it club versus country because on one side I've got him in his North End kit and on the other in his England kit.

"Now he's signed it I'm going to take the panel off and go and get it lacquered."

John drew up the blue, white and yellow design and took it to Lambretta in Preston to be sprayed.

It also features a North End Soul badge and a silhouette of the famous Finney Splash statue on the front.

On one side is the number 7 – Sir Tom's shirt number during his North End days – and on the other FF3, the number of the season ticket John's dad held for many years in Deepdale's old Pavilion Stand.

It also features all his appearance information – but was lacquered just a day before Tom's North End appearance record was altered from 473 to 472.

John, who has had a season ticket for more than 20 years and now sits in the Invincibles Pavilion, believes North End still have a shot at the Championship play-offs.

"You never know," he said. "You have to be a optimist. This is not like following any other club."
