Ribble Valley MP Nigel Evans will appear in court today to face sex allegations.
Mr Evans is due to attend a hearing at Preston Magistrates’ Court this morning after being charged with eight counts of alleged sexual misconduct involving seven men.
He has been accused of five counts of sexual assault, two of indecent assault and one of rape dating from 2002 up to March/April of this year.
Conservatives in the Ribble Valley have rallied round the 55-year-old, who resigned as Commons deputy speaker after being charged last week.
Mr Evans, who has been Ribble Valley MP for 21 years, has protested his innocence.
He vowed to “robustly defend” himself and said: “I have had so many hugs, prayers and good wishes. I would like to thank everyone who has shown me such compassionate consideration, my family particularly, my association, who have been marvellous.”
