A man has been arrested following a hunt involving sniffer dogs after a schoolgirl told police she was assaulted as she walked home from school.
The victim, who is 14, was cutting through Burgh Wood, a woodland close to Lower Burgh Way, in Birkacre, Chorley, when she was approached by a man.
He is said to have touched the terrified teenager, who was alone at the time, inappropriately in a secluded area of the woods.
The victim managed to get away and called police from her mobile phone at around 3.20pm on Mondy
Officers attended the scene within minutes.
A Lancashire Police spokesman said: “ We immediately launched a hunt for the suspect, searching the woods and the area around.
“It involved the sniffer dog team.
“A man was found hiding at the bottom of the valley.
“A 20-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of indecent assault and has been released on bail.”
Burgh Wood is designated as Ancient Semi Natural Woodland and is well used and well known locally.
It is cared for by the Woodland Trust.
