Masked robbers smashed into a bank with sledgehammers as security guards replenished a cash machine.
G4S guards were restocking the cash machine at Santander on Hough Lane, Leyland, at around 8pm on Tuesday when three men smashed their way into the bank in a night time raid.
Once inside they have used a Stihl saw to attack the ATM and stole two cash cassettes.
The three men ran from the bank and got into a Volkswagen Bora driven by a fourth criminal. It was later found burnt out a short distance away near Cleveland Road, off Golden Hill Lane.
It is thought after abandoning the Volkswagen, they got into other vehicles to make their escape.
Det Sgt Ian Derbyshire said, “Fortunately, no one was seriously injured but understandably everyone involved has been left extremely shaken by what can only be described as a terrifying ordeal.
“An investigation is underway and I would appeal to anybody that may have witnessed either the robbery itself or the offenders leaving the scene to contact police immediately.”
In November 2010 the same branch was subject to a burglary in which criminals broke into the YMCA charity shop next door and used drills and hammers to cut through the wall and enter the bank.
Once inside they cut into two ATM machines and stole cash.
Anyone with information should call Lancashire Police on 101.
