Robot wars of the wards
It's Robot Wars ... but these mean machines are not fighting each other – they are attacking hospital germs.
Lancashire Teaching Hospitals is promoting cleanliness by investing 35,000 in the latest technology to deep clean the wards.
The special hydrogen peroxide cleaning robots will be used at Royal Preston and Chorley and South Ribble hospitals in an effort to maintain cleanliness and slash infections.
One of the new robots has been stationed at each hospital.
Under supervision, they will be sent into a sealed room or ward bay area.
They release a very fine mist of hydrogen peroxide, which reaches deep into the nooks and crannies that are difficult to tackle when cleaning by hand.
Ian Cox, director of facilities and services, said: "The trial of these robots is fantastic news for the cleaning staff and Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.
"It also provides the hospitals with the opportunity to be one of the first in the country to use this new technology. I am sure these exciting new machines will prove a success and that they are likely to be utilised in other trusts around the country."
Tony Curtis, chief executive at Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, said: "We are committed to reducing hospital infections and have invested heavily in our cleaning services. This year has seen the trust bring the cleaning provision at Royal Preston Hospital in-house.
"Infections and cleanliness remain a cause of concern for patients and the public and we are working to do all we can to minimise bugs such as MRSA and C Difficile and maintain high standards of cleanliness.
"These new robots are another tool in our armoury to beat the bugs."
Hospital bosses say they are getting on top of hospital infections, with just six MRSA infections reported in the last six months.
