Police are hunting a well-dressed raider after an armed robbery at a city centre building society.

The man, described as being in his late 50s or early 60s and wearing a blazer, threatened a female cashier at the Nationwide branch in Fishergate, Preston and forced her to hand over a “large quantity” of cash. He was carrying a white plastic bag which he claimed contained a firearm.

The raid happened at around 1.25pm yesterday when Fishergate was busy with shoppers. Det Insp Warren Atkinson said: “A lone male entered the premises and made threats to a female cashier, demanding money. Some cash - a large quantity - was handed over.

“The man then left the building society and and turned right down Fishergate in the direction of the railway station.

“This has left the cashier and several other members of staff extremely shaken. We have trained staff supporting them.

“I would appeal to anyone who may have witnessed this or saw anything suspicious to come forward.”

The raider is described as being a white male, approxinately 5ft 2in tall, stockily built, with short dark and grey hair. He was wearing a dark grey or blue blazer or suit jacket.
