Fire breathers, knights on horseback and stilt walkers will be among the attractions at a ‘purple party’ to mark Preston’s status as a great night out.
There will be special discounts at nightspots for people dressing for the occasion and even special cocktails commissioned.
Jessica Toomey, general manager of the Frog and Bucket comedy club in the city, said the city’s night-time economy needed to strike while the spotlight was on the city following the recent Guild celebrations.
She said: “The Guild has put us back in the spotlight and shown a lot of people who may have forgotten about Preston exactly what we can do.
“A lot of people came back during the Guild who had not been back for years and were impressed with what they saw.
“Now we need to pull out all the stops to make sure, if they are coming back in the weeks after the Guild, we show them what we have here.”
The manager added the comedy club on Lord’s Walk was looking to invite some “very special guests” for its part of the show, which will also mark its third year in the city.
The purple party, which will coincide with events in other towns and cities with the status, gets underway on Wednesday, October 10 and comes to a close with street performance on Saturday, October 13 night.
The event is organised by a steering group of nightspot bosses pulled together by the Preston Business Improvement District (BID).
BID spokesman Mark Whittle said the New Britannia Inn on Heatley Street is offering to cut 25% off customer’s bill.
He said: “There are others who are giving money off for people wearing purple, it is all an attempt to get people in the mood.”
The Purple Flag accreditation, which works like the blue flag status awarded to beaches, is backed by businesses, the Government and police and run by the Association of Town Centre Management (ATCM).
Chairman Philip Kolvin said: “The purple party is a fantastic way to showcase the best that our towns and cities have to offer and the important role that the evening economy plays in our local communities.”
