Hundreds of schoolchildren have been warned to be careful after a man in a white van approached a young girl in the Preston area.
Police have issued an alert to schools in Penwortham following the incident last Tuesday as the pupil was walking home from the town’s Girls High School.
Officers say the youngster had just left school and was at the junction of Cop Lane and Rawstorne Road when the van driver stopped and tried to engage her in conversation. She walked off and reported what had happened.
“It was just after school finished at around 3.25pm,” said a police spokesperson. “The girl was making her way home when the man stopped to try and talk to her. Sensibly she didn’t take him on and walked away.
“We have spoken to schools in the area and asked them to issue a message to parents to warn their children to be vigilant. Fortunately we have not had any further reports of incidents in the area. We don’t want to be alarmist, but we would always tell people if they feel suspicious to contact us.”
