Pupils take safety campaign to Prime Minister
Campaigning youngsters who battled to get a lower speed restriction imposed outside their school are taking their case to Downing Street.
Pupils from St Patrick's Catholic Primary School in Walton-le-Dale have been invited to meet Gordon Brown.
They wrote to the Prime Minister as part of their drive to persuade County Hall bosses to lower the 40mph limit on Higher Walton Road.
Dad-of-two and school governor David Gilmore said the children had organised a concerted campaign after a pupil was badly hurt outside the school last year.
He said: "The school fronts directly on to the main road and there are only two small barriers protecting 200 children from the road. The speed limit outside school is 40mph, but it goes into 30 just before and just after.
"We had all sorts of meetings to try to get it reduced, but there are so many obstacles."
As a result of their letters, the children have been invited to Downing Street on July 17. They will also be taken on a tour of the Houses of Parliament and the Foreign Office.
Acting headteacher Kath Gleave said: "We are also trying to get a path which runs at the back of the school made into a proper lit walkway."
