Proms in the park for Guild

Sweet tunes and gentle melodies will ring out from a Preston park if organisers of the 2012 Guild can land Proms in the Park.

Plans are underway for the celebrations, which the Guild committee hopes include staging the BBC Proms in the Park.

Coun Ken Hudson, leader of Preston Council, said: "We are hoping it will be down on Avenham and Miller Parks.

"We would welcome that type of event on the park during the Guild year and we are actively trying to achieve a successful outcome.

"It is one of a number of ideas that have been discussed – it is a massive event."

This year the BBC Proms in the Park will take place on Saturday, September 12, at Hyde Park, in London, featuring hugely popular soprano Katherine Jenkins and a special appearance from Barry Manilow.

On Wednesday, June 10 the Evening Post revealed the Guild Hall could be out of action during the Guild celebrations due to work on the 700m Tithebarn project.

The Guild Hall, in Lancaster Road, is one of the most important venues in the city but could be sidelined for some of the festivities.
