Prolific thief in hot water

One of Preston’s most prolific shoplifters has appeared in court accused of flouting his curfew order three times.

John Barry, 38, of Plungington Road, Preston, is currently on a curfew between 7pm and 7am.

It was imposed after he admitted stealing £5 of wine on October 28 and possessing a Class C drug on November 7 last year.

But he admitted failing to comply with his community order by being absent from the address specified in his curfew order, with the total time amounting to more than 21 hours.

The order was revoked by the magistrates bench at Preston Magistrates Court.

They ruled he must pay a victim surcharge of £60 and £85 costs.

Barry, who bit a shopkeeper last year when she challenged him as he stole cosmetics from a Boots store, has been arrested several times.

In the last 12 months he has been caught for 10 shopliftings and one assault.

In December Barry was among 21 criminals sent a Christmas card from officers warning they would not let him ruin anyone’s Christmas.
