An investigation is underway after six wheeled bins caught alight in the Preston Guild Hall.
Firefighters from the city’s station were called to the incidentshortly before 6pm yesterday after flames and thick, black smoke was seen billowing from an outside balcony within the complex.
They found the industrial-sized bins well alight on the balcony, close to Tithebarn Street, upon arrival.
John Leach, acting watch manager at Preston fire station, confirmed the incident was being treated as “suspicious” and police were investigating.
He said: “The bins were in a lockable compound on the balcony which is outside of the main Guild Hall complex.
“The only damage was to the bins which were completely destroyed and some heat scorching to the brickwork around there.”
A high plume of smoke was visible over the building across the city during the fire.
Two fire engines from Preston fire station attended along with a third engine from Penwortham joining fellow firefighters at the scene..
