Priests appeal for ‘female friendly’ bishop

Latest news from the Lancashire Evening Post

Latest news from the Lancashire Evening Post

More than 50 priests have signed a letter calling for the next Bishop of Blackburn to accept the ordination of female priests.

The Crown Nominations Commission (CNC) will meet at the end of this month to discuss a succcessor to the Right Rev Nicholas Reade, who retired as Bishop of Blackburn in October last year.

The Rev Chris Newlands, Vicar of Lancaster, has co-ordinated the letter, which will be sent to The Archbishop of York Dr John
Sentamu, chairman of the committee. A spokesman for Dr Sentamu said: “The appointment of the new bishop is a matter for the CNC and therefore we cannot comment further as such matters are private.”
