Thousands of homes lost power in Penwortham after an electrical fault.
Nearly 4,000 homes across the town were affected by the incident on Monday night.
Jonny Morgan, spokesman for Electricity North West, said it was a “big fault” affecting 3,977 homes.
He said: “The power cut was reported to us at 6.56pm, and we sent engineers out to the Penwortham area immediately.
“We managed to get a couple of hundred houses back on within 30 minutes. We will be working to restore power to other homes in stages, and it is not yet possible to say what has caused this issue or when it will be resolved.”
One resident of Meadows Reach, Penwortham, said: “We had people round for a meal, and I was just putting some food in the oven when everything went off.
“We were sat there in candlelight, wondering what to do, then the lights and everything else came back on at 7.42pm.”
