Police bid to review Preston pub's licence

Police have produced a dossier of incidents linked to a troubled Preston pub and called for its licence to be reviewed.

Incidents involving Class A drugs, a machete and assaults on staff have all sparked police visits to The Gamull in Ribbleton in recent months.

Now, police have called for the Longridge Road pub's licence to be reviewed - and want door staff to be employed to ward off trouble.

Police have a record of 32 incidents linked to the pub since January 16 2009. Of those, 23 took place inside the pub and eight were recorded as crimes.

The licensee Marisa McKenzie reported she had been assaulted in March 2009, just weeks after she took over the business.

Another member of staff allegedly suffered a broken shoulder during a robbery and a customer was arrested for possession of a class A drug.

Other incidents include a "knife fight" last September which lead to the pub being closed, women fighting outside and smashed windows.

A man was arrested in December for possession of a machete.

There have also been claims children as young as eight have been in the Admiral Taverns pub, and there was even a fight between two gangs on Christmas Day.

Sgt John Lovick from Preston Police said: "We are currently working with Admiral Taverns and the staff in achieving an outcome that would be viable for the business and safe for the community."

Mike Thorpe, head of licensing at Preston Council, said other interested parties had until April 6 to make representations about the pub and said the review meeting would be held by May 5.

He said: "It's a premises police have been keeping an eye on."

A spokesman for Admiral said: "The Gamull has now reopened and trading as usual."
