PNE fans want streets named after legends

Preston North End fans have backed moves to pay tribute to two Deepdale legends by naming streets in their honour.

Councillors Terry and Joyce Cartwright, who represent the Deepdale ward, want Sir Tom Finney Way to be joined by Bill Shankly Way and Alan Kelly Way.

They've written to council chiefs, suggesting Hollins Road be re-named after wing-half Shankly and that the land along the side of the club shop, which leads to Lowthorpe Road, be named in memory of Irish goalkeeper Kelly, who passed away in May and played a record 513 times for the club.

And Coun Terry Cartwright said: "Why don't they call the car parks after their old players too?"

Today, the suggestions won support from Preston North End supporters.

Jack Carroll, 74, who lives in Wheelton, near Chorley, remembers seeing Bill Shankly play in the first match he attended in 1946.

He said: "Bill Shankly and Alan Kelly are important in Preston's history."

And his wife, Adrianne, 72, who recalled Sir Tom visiting her family home as a plumber, said: "I think more of those players should be remembered."

Deepdale resident Diane Eccles, 50, who used to work as a canteen assistant at the club, said: "All the supporters admire them and I think it would be a good idea."

And Matthew Hollinger, 44, who lives in the Moor Lane area and follows the Lilywhites home and away, said: "It would be a good thing – it needs to be done.

"I've got loads of pictures of the old players and the fans respect them."

But Phil Howarth, 47, who lives in Hutton, near Preston, said: "It would cause a bit of confusion with the residents – they would have to change their addresses and all their bank details."

Preston already has a number of streets named after sporting stars, including Sir Tom Finney Way, Tom Benson Way and Flintoff Way.
