DOZENS of pigs were killed following a barn fire in a Lancashire village.

Fire crews were called to a farm on Doles Lane in Bretherton, Leyland, at 9.35pm on Sunday, after a blaze broke out in a piggery.

Fire fighters said one quarter of one of the piggeries was on fire, and they used two jets to extinguish the flames.

About 20 pigs were saved, however a number of sows and a large number of piglets were killed.

Three fire engines attended the blaze, from Leyland, Penwortham and Tarleton.

The fire was described as not suspicious, and the cause was under investigation.
