Pie eating competitors to be drug tested
Random drugs tests are to be introduced to the World Pie Eating Championships.
The internationally-famous culinary annual showdown, which takes place this year at Harry's Bar in Wigan, Greater Manchester, on Tuesday, December 15. It is billed as "Pie Noon".
Championships Executive President Tony Callaghan, owner of Harry's Bar, said: "Gravy has traditionally been the performance-enhancing drug of choice amongst pie eaters at this level, but since we banned it after a series of questionable concoctions were created by contenders, they've been trying to find other ways of generating lubricative advantage - and we're hearing rumours that cough mixture is the new Bisto.
"In tests we've found this can take around two seconds off the time taken to eat a regulation Championship pie.
"We'll be putting a couple of big blokes on the door to search pockets randomly for cough mixture."
Whoever consumes a regulation pie in the fastest time will be declared world champion.
The cooked dimensions of the official pie are a diameter of 12cm and a depth of 3.5cm, and a pie wall angle from base to top of between zero and 15 degrees.
Minimum content cube dimensions of the meat and potato mix are 1cm, and they must have 66% meat content not including pastry.
