An elderly woman who walks with the aid of a frame was left terrified in her own home after a conman stole her savings from her handbag.
The 84-year-old, who lives in Brook Street, Plungington, Preston, fell victim to the thug after answering her door at noon on Monday.
The thief, in his 60s, and wearing glasses and a dark zipped jacket, told her she had a problem with her guttering and that he could fix it for her.
The dubious pensioner felt intimidated as the criminal, who was already standing in the vestibule, invited himself into her home and asked for money.
At first the frightened pensioner told him her husband could do the work but he carried on putting pressure on her.
As she hobbled around her front room, he distracted her and stole money from her handbag before leaving.
Detectives today branded the criminal “despicable” as they launched an appeal for information.
Det Insp Warren Atkinson, of Preston Police, said: “ The woman is very upset and shaken. This is a despicable crime – this man has clearly targeted a very trusting and vulnerable member of our community.
“Luckily there is a great community spirit in Plungington and the victim is being cared for by family and neighbours.
“For me this is one of the most sickening types of crime that can be committed against members of our community.
“This lady deserves our support and protection.
“If anyone has any information about who could be behind this burglary we would urge them to come forward.”
