An 82-year-old woman was taken to hospital after she fell down an escalator at St George’s Shopping Centre in Preston.

The pensioner was said to have suffered serious bleeding from a head injury plus cuts and bruises in the incident, which happened at around 1.30pm on Friday.

A spokesman for St George’s Shopping Centre said: “An 82-year-old lady unfortunately fell on the escalator in the rotunda area of the shopping centre, above Costa Coffee.

“Retail staff were quick to the scene and are currently gathering information about the incident.

“The paramedics have taken her to hospital. She had cuts and bruises and was clearly shaken.”

A North West Ambulance Service spokesman said it received a call at around 1.34pm.

She said the caller had reported “serious bleeding” from a head wound and that the woman was on route to Royal Preston Hospital.
