An elderly woman has died after a bedroom fire at her home.

When they got inside they discovered the woman unconscious in her bedroom, with severe burns. She was taken to the Royal Preston Hospital, but died of her injuries on Saturday evening.

John Taylor, spokesman for Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service, said: “Firefighters knew she had been severely injured, and during the evening we got word from the hospital that she had passed away.

“At the moment we are unsure how the fire started, and a full investigation has been launched with the police.”

Leyland station manager Steve Docherty said he did not suspect arson.

The fire was contained with the bedroom but the rest of the flat has suffered severe smoke damage.
