Comedian and novelist Alexei Sayle wants to become the next Doctor Who after David Tennant quits the role.
The 56-year-old made the revelation at a UCLan event promoting his new novel Mister Roberts.
It is not the first time the Liverpudlian has put himself forward for the part – he asked to become the "first Socialist Doctor" after starring alongside Colin Baker in Doctor Who serial Revelation of the Daleks in 1985.
He said: "Maybe, I will try again as there's been two relatively young people. I suppose that's the target audience but I think it's time for an old geezer."
And Mr Sayle, who recently produced a television documentary about Liverpool and its regeneration for BBC Two, thinks Preston could follow his home city's lead.
He said: "It's not easy but I think you need to make places, which does not necessarily mean Preston, look better. There's been a thing since the war of knocking down buildings and leaving holes in the ground and not necessarily caring about things."
Mr Sayle was in Preston promoting his book at the Mitchell and Kenyon Cinema where he spoke to an audience including students taking the university' screenwriting course.
