Mutts get haircuts to find new homes

Pooches in real need of a pampering are getting a free makeover to help them find new homes.

Abandoned dogs brought into charity Homeless Hounds are often in a bedraggled state, some with matted fur or skin conditions after being mistreated or neglected by their owners.

Bamber Bridge pet salon Mutz Cutz heard about their plight and decided to offer free grooming sessions to get their tails wagging again.

Their efforts to make the dogs look their best has already resulted in two of them being offered a loving home with new owners.

Chloe Horner, who runs Homeless Hounds in Broughton with her parents Mary and Peter, said: “A good grooming helps to add to the appeal of the dog.

“They come out looking and smelling a lot better!

“It’s nice for them to get an experience they might never have had before.

“A lot of the dogs have been in kennels for at least a week before we get them and we try our best to spend as much time as we can with them, but it’s difficult because we have so many, with 31 in our care at the minute.

“It takes a professional to groom them properly, especially if they are wriggling around a lot.

“The shop has been brilliant, squeezing our dogs in where they can. It’s nice for the new owners to get their dogs in a reasonable condition.”

It is not the first time Mutz Cutz, part of Armers Mucky Paws pet shop in Station Road, has worked with a charity.

Owner Dawn Harkin’s soldier husband Si has arranged collections of dozens of toys and treats for hard-working military dogs in Afghanistan over the last few years through Yelp for Heroes.

Si said: “We wanted to sponsor a local animal charity. We saw Homeless Hounds a couple of times at events and asked they what they needed.

“They get dogs coming in that are heavily matted and in a bad state and in need of a bit of TLC, and grooming is one of their biggest expenses.

“If someone is coming in to possibly rehome them, it gives them a chance of looking their best.”

Homeless Hounds are looking for donations for a chocolate bingo night this month. See www.homelesshounds.org.uk
