Muslim school set to open
A school for Muslim children will open its doors next month with its first intake of pupils – despite being blighted by vandals.
Workmen are up against the clock to put the finishing touches to the Abrar Academy in Garstang Road, which will accommodate up to 200 pupils.
The first intake of pupils at the school, which will provide secondary education for Muslim children, will start next month and it is expected it will take a few years for the school to fill up to capacity.
However, throughout development the site of the former antiques centre has been blighted by vandalism with more than 200 panes of glass being broken in the last 18 months.
Designer Ismail Rawat, director of Aamir Designs, said: "At the moment we are not replacing glass but we are going to put security screens over the windows. They have to be of a design that has been approved by the planners
"This vandalism costs a lot in time, labour and materials and it affects the fabric of the building. When it rains it all pours in.
"There will be security cameras in place by the time the school opens next month and hopefully that will be the last of it."
