Police have launched a murder investigation following the death of a three-year-old girl in a hotel pool.

Officers were called by the Ambulance Service shortly before 11am on Thursday following the report of a child drowning in a swimming pool at the Dalmeny Hotel on South Promenade in St Annes.

The child, a three year old from Galashiels, Scotland, was removed from the water and taken to Blackpool Victoria Hospital.

She was later transferred to Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital in a critical condition.

The youngster died at around 8pm that day.

Detective Inspector Nick Connaughton from Blackpool CID said, “This is a tragic situation where a young girl has lost her fight for life following an incident at a swimming pool in a hotel in St Annes.

“We are now treating this sad death as suspicious and are investigating just how the child has come into difficulties in the pool.”

She is currently in police custody.
