A husband accused of murdering his wife has made his first crown court appearance.

Mark Dyson, 54, was charged with murder after the body of his wife Carole, 53, was found at their home in Harrison Road, Adlington, on Tuesday.

During the brief hearing in which Mr Dyson appeared via videolink from HMP Preston, Dyson spoke very quietly to confirm he understood the proceedings.

Wearing a grey sweater he appeared subdued, with his eyes cast down, as a timetable was set out for the legal proceedings.

A post mortem examination revealed Mrs Dyson died as a result of asphyxiation.

A second post mortem has been ordered on behalf of the defence.

No application was made for bail and Dyson was remanded in custody.

He will return to court on July 31 to enter a plea to the charge of murder.

Lawyers will return to court on Tuesday to agree a trial date but it is understood Dyson will not attend the hearing.
