Mum’s prison visit theft anger

Stolen: Jackie ONeil outside Preston Prison, where her phone and cash was stolen

Stolen: Jackie ONeil outside Preston Prison, where her phone and cash was stolen

A mother has had £220 in cash and a mobile phone stolen from a secure locker at Preston’s prison.

Jackie O’Neill, 27, of Balcarres Road, Ashton, left her rent
money in a locker along with her keys, purse and a Blackberry phone when visiting husband, Ashley, who is on remand in the jail.

When she returned to the locker after her visit, she says her handbag containing the items had disappeared.

She said the incident was reported to prison staff, who are believed to have supplied Lancashire Police with CCTV of a thief breaking into the secure locker.

The mother-of-four said: “The officers at the prison could not believe it, they said it was the first time it had ever happened.

“You would not imagine you could get robbed in a secure
locker, let alone one in a prison.

“I have left things in those
lockers before and nothing like this has happened, I cannot
believe it, I am just shocked.”

Jackie said that she was particularly angry that precious pictures, taken of her children opening their presents on Christmas Day, were on the phone.

She said: “I’m so mad. The phone is blocked now so I’ll never get them back.

“I’ve also had to ask for more time to pay my rent and have all my locks changed. If I hadn’t had a spare back door key I’d have been locked out.”

A spokesman for Lancashire Police said he was aware of the incident and an investigation was underway.
