MP’s worry that homes will close

West Lancashire MP Rosie Cooper

Rosie Cooper, West Lancashire MP, has written to the Secretary of State for Health and to NHS England to raise concerns of local care homes.

Staff have told Ms Cooper that continued local authority fee freezes, along with rising wages, pension contributions, energy costs and insurance, means that care homes are becoming less financially viable and there are fears that many will close.

Ms Cooper said: “I know we have to reduce costs but to the point that care homes are being pushed to the edge of the financial cliff is frightening for the residents and their families who rely on these homes.

“What this shows is we need to find a realistic and long-term solution for social care funding. Cutting budgets in local government and in the health service is only going to hit the most vulnerable who need to be cared for.”
