A local MP has put his name to an open letter opposing Government plans to legalise same-sex marriage.
Ben Wallace, MP for Wyre and Preston North, is among 58 MPs and peers who say that the Government does not have a mandate to redefine marriage.
In a letter to the Daily Telegraph yesterday they said that, given the legal rights established through civil partnerships, the proposed redefinition was unnecessary.
The signatories, including 35 Conservative MPs, said: “We understand some parliamentarians support freedom for same sex couples to marry, but we support a freedom from the state being able to redefine the meaning of marriage.”
The letter pointed out than none of three main parties had stood on a platform to redefine marriage.
It added that the Government was ignoring “the overwhelming public response against the plans.”
