Motorcylist crashes taking ‘danger’ turn

Eastway, Fulwood

Eastway, Fulwood

A motorcyclist has warned a roundabout on a traffic-clogged commuter route is a ‘death trap’ after he crashed his bike.

Phillip Jervis, 50, of Great Park Drive, Leyland, suffered significant bruising when he lost control of his Yamaha 125CC motorbike on a roundabout on Eastway in Fulwood, close to Asda.

Mr Jervis, a biker of more than 20 years’ experience was attempting to make a right turn from Eastway onto Caxton Road when he felt the bike ‘slip from under him’.

He said: “I turned right off Eastway onto Caxton Road, I was driving slowly but I think there is something treacherous on the surface.

“The bike just slipped from under me.

“When I got up I saw there was a moss on the surface.

“I think with there being trees and there is not much sunlight, it has grown.

“I was doing between 10 to 15mph, it is not like I was flying around.

“It is a dangerous thing.”

He suffered bruising to his arm and chest and hundreds of pounds of damage was done to his motorbike in the crash which happened at around 10.25am on Wednesday.

Phillip who works on Caxton Road claimed a number of his colleagues who cycle to work have experienced similar problems.

He said: “I could not see any diesel, you can normally see it.

“You look for these sorts of things when you are on motorbikes but no matter what speed you do around there you will fall off.”

Phillip added he contacted Lancashire County Council which said staff would visit the site within 10 days.

Paul Dunne, Lancashire County Council’s highways manager for Preston, said: “We recently received complaints about the level of skid resistance on the roundabout, which was only resurfaced around three years ago.

“We installed warning signs at the approaches advising drivers to take care when using the roundabout while our investigations into the condition of the road surface continue.

“Once we’ve completed our investigations, we will look at the results to see what we can do, if anything, to improve the road surface.”

On Sunday motorcylist Patrick Cresswell, 46, and passenger Suzanne Smith, 25, died after being involved in a collision with a tractor on Mythop Road Road near Weeton.
