More involvement in building plan

Councillors have called for more input on a scheme which looks at making use of the county’s empty buildings.

Earlier this year Eric Wright Group were appointed by Lancashire County Council to work in south and west Lancashire as part of Lancashire Regeneration Property Partnerships.

The scheme looks at surplus buildings and works on proposals to make use of them. The scheme went before the authority’s scrutiny committee, who asked for councillors to be more involved in the process.

Coun Bill Winlow, sitting on the committee, said: “Members need to see what is available at the moment. It would be most helpful if we could introduce some member involvement into the process.”

He also asked for councillors to see a list of buildings that were available in their own districts so they could be involved in any decisions.

County property bosses said asset management was ongoing and as part of this they were looking at all property in a strategic way.

They said any disposal of buildings would go through the normal decision-making process, which means being signed off by the leader of the council and could be subject to being called in by the committee.

County Coun Peter Britcliffe, chair of the scrutiny committee, said: “We welcome the report and ask corporate property management to bring forward suggestions on how to increase member involvement, and ask each group to put forward suggestions to see how they would like to do this.”
