Man admits crash which killed cyclist

A motorist could be facing jail after admitting causing the death of a BAE worker.

Brian Creasey, 50, of Riverside, Clitheroe, pleaded guilty to causing death by careless driving after cyclist Ian Hammel was killed in the collision on the A59 close to the entrance of BAE Systems in Samlesbury, near Preston.

Mr Hammel, 53, from Penwortham, was employed at the site and worked as an engineer on the F-35 Lightning II programme, helping build the tail section of the jets.

But just before 7.10am on Wednesday September 29 last year, as he turned right into the gates at the start of a shift, he collided with the car, driven by Creasey.

It is believed Creasey was driving towards the M6 junction for business in the south of England at the time of the collision.

However, there was no suggestion he was speeding. Mr Hammel suffered a serious head injury, as well as injuries to his pelvis and chest, and was taken to Royal Preston Hospital.

Initially he made signs of a recovery however his condition deteriorated and he died 10 days later on October 9.

Following the crash, the road was closed in both directions for more than two hours while emergency crews attended the scene and carried out investigations. Mellor Brook was also closed off.

The A59 has seen a number of fatal collisions in recent years and the speed limit was under review at the time of the collision.

It was reduced from national speed limit to 50mph on October 22, two weeks after Mr Hammel was killed.

Creasey, who was unhurt in the collision, has now admitted his careless or inconsiderate driving led to the death of the BAE engineer.

He has been granted bail and will return to Preston Crown Court on June 1 to be sentenced.

The maximum sentence he can receive is five years in prison.
