A man was punched in the face several times during an unprovoked assault in the early hours of Christmas Day.

Police said the 34-year-old victim was attacked while walking along Burscough Street in Ormskirk, at around 2.10am following a night out.

As he approached the junction with Scarisbrick Street he was assaulted by a man.

PC Ian Fisher said: “This was a nasty attack which was completely unprovoked. I am very keen to speak to anyone who could help us to trace the person responsible.

“We believe there was a young couple who may have witnessed what happened and we would appeal to that couple, if you saw what happened, please get in touch.

“There was also a group of three people stood by Ormskirk Paint and DIY store that may also have seen the assault take place. If that was you, please give us a call.”

Anyone with any information should call police on 101 quoting log reference LC-20131225-0124.

People with information can also contact the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111 or online at www.crimestoppers-uk.org.
