Man jailed after drunken attack

Leon Stobbart

Leon Stobbart

A man who tried to suffocate his girlfriend with a plastic bag while she slept has been jailed for seven years.

Leon Stobbart. 24, had been drinking on March 16 when he sent his girlfriend a text message saying he was going to kill her.

Preston Crown heard that he then went to his home address in Willow Close, Forton, and put the bag over her head as she slept.

When she began to struggle Stobbart punched her repeatedly to the face and then tried to smother her with a pillow. The attack only stopped when police arrived at the address.

Stobbart, who had already pleaded guilty to a section 18 wounding offence, was jailed for seven years.

Sgt Ian Lawrence, of Lancaster public protection unit, said: “Stobbart carried out a prolonged and terrifying attack on his partner when he came home in a drunken rage.

“The severity of the offence is reflected in Stobbart’s sentence.”
