A man was in a critical condition after an operation to remove a crossbow bolt from his skull.

The 26-year-old was rushed to hospital after firing the weapon at himself on the side of a motorway, following a police pursuit from Beacon Fell.

Commuters faced long delays after the incident closed the eastbound carriageway of the M55 near Preston yesterday morning.

A police spokesman said an officer came across a man in a vehicle on Beacon Fell who was in possession of a crossbow, at about 2.30am on Tuesday.

He said: “The officer retreated to a safe distance at which point the man drove off at speed.

“The vehicle was pursued by police and was eventually stopped on the M55 eastbound link to the M6 southbound around 3.30am.

“The man then discharged the crossbow which caused him to suffer a serious head injury.

“He was taken to Royal Preston Hospital.”

The man was yesterday afternoon described as being in a “critical” condition.

The spokesman said: “A 26-year-old man from Poulton-le-Fylde is in Royal Preston Hospital and has had surgery to remove a crossbow bolt from his skull.

“He remains in hospital in a critical condition.”

An investigation into the circumstances is currently ongoing.

The early-morning disruption had a knock-on effect on the A6 and the already busy Broughton roundabout.

The motorway was shut for more than four hours after the man was stopped, and there were still long delays in the area after it was re-opened.
