Man escaped car before it set ablaze

Latest news

Latest news

A man had a lucky escape when his car burst into flames minutes after he left a motorway because smoke was coming out of its engine.

The driver, said to be in his 30s, left the M65 and parked his Ford S-Max in Bolton Road in Hoghton.

Firefighters were called to the incident, near the Boat Yard Inn, at around 11.45am on Thursday.

Paul Williams, crew manager, said: “He thought it was steam coming from his engine so he pulled over to the side of the road. He realised it was smoke, got out of the car and then it set on fire.

“It was well alight when we arrived. Quite a lot of people would have seen it.

“It was a good job he pulled over. I don’t think it was long after he pulled over that it spread to the passenger compartment.”

Firefighters put out the blaze after tackling flames for around 10 minutes.

Mr Williams said the driver was unharmed in the incident.
