A man caught smoking heroin in his police cell has been ordered to take a drug rehabilitation course.
Carl Rainford was searched by officers who became suspicious when they saw smoke coming out of cell 22 at Blackpool Central police station.
Rainford, 40, formerly of Empire House, Preston, was found to have five packets of heroin hidden between the cheeks of his buttocks.
Rainford, now living in Reads Avenue, Blackpool, pleaded guilty to possessing heroin and theft from a shop at Blackpool Magistrates’ Court.
He was sentenced to 12 months supervision and told to carry out a a six-month drug rehabilitation course.
Rainford had been put in a cell after he failed to attend court for stealing £156 of DVDs from W H Smiths, Preston, on June 16 this year.
James Ball, defending, said Rainford, who appeared in court on crutches, was in extreme pain after almost dying of a hip infection three years ago.
He said his client had been in and out of hospital and had resorted to smoking heroin to relieve the pain.
