Police are appealing for witnesses following an assault in Nelson.

The incident took place between 10.30pm and 11pm on Saturday, June 15, on Leeds Road.

The victim and the offender were both on Leeds Road, near to the junction Barkerhouse Road.

The victim, a 65-year-old man from Nelson, received a sustained serious head injury and is in a critical condition at the Royal Preston Hospital.

The offender is described as white, aged between 18 and 22 years old, and approximately 6ft tall. He had short light coloured hair and was wearing a hooded jacket.

Det Insp Marie Haworth, from Burnley CID, said: “I would appeal to anyone who was in the area at the time and who witnessed what happened to come forward and contact the police. The victim remains in a critical condition in hospital and we need to find out exactly what happened and bring the person responsible to justice.”
