M-way lane remains closed after snow

One lane of a Lancashire motorway is still closed after a lorry jackknifed in the bad weather.

Police and Highways Agency officials are working to fully re-open the southbound M61 between junction 8 at Chorley and junction 6 at Horwich.

The matrix signs were still set to 50mph at 9am on Saturday, with congestion reported.

It comes as the Highways Agency continued to warn motorists in Lancashire to take care in the snow.

Heavy snow and freezing temperatures overnight into Saturday morning have created hazerdous driving conditions, the agency said.

Mark Sidaway, Met Office forecaster based in the Highways Agency’s National Traffic Operations Centre, said: “Conditions have varied considerably across the country, so our message if you’re travelling further afield this weekend is to check the forecast for your entire journey and be prepared. The weather at your destination and for the journey home could be quite different to when you set out.

“After some very heavy snow over the north and many central areas on Friday night and Saturday morning, we expect the severe weather to edge southwards again with snow spreading into East Anglia and even further into the south east during the course of the weekend.”

Steve Crosthwaite, head of the agency’s National Traffic Operations Centre said: “It has been a very busy spell for our winter service fleet and they will carry on working flat out for as long as needed. We would urge road users to play their part too by checking weather forecasts and traffic conditions before they set out and to drive with extra care.”

The Highways Agency has a 500-strong fleet of salt spreaders and snow ploughs to keep the motorways and major A roads as clear as possible. The fleet has been in operation throughout the winter and has already clocked up around 2,500,000 miles treating the network.

Heavy snow has caused disruption to roads and led to the closure of 22 schools in Lancashire on Friday.

But there has been no reported delays to flights at Blackpool Airport or train services in the county.
