‘Lock up to lock thieves out’

Motorists are being warned to lock their vehicles following a series of thefts.

In the last few days in Blackpool, thieves targeted ten vehicles, taking sat navs, tools and car stereos which had been left on display. Wheel trims and spotlights were also stolen.

A light blue Audi A4 was also stolen from Hornby Road on Friday, February 8. A white Ford Transit van, which had been left with the keys inside, was stolen from Gorse Street on February 9. The van was found abandoned on a nearby street.

Patrols are being increased in hot spot areas and neighbourhood police teams are making motorists and residents aware when they notice vehicles and homes are insecure.

Sgt Steve Hardman said: “We know thieves will deliberately target unlocked cars in the area. If a passing thief sees something that may be of value inside a car they will take their chances – especially if you have made it easy for them by leaving your vehicle unlocked.

“Make sure you wind windows up and lock the doors when you get out of your vehicle – even if you are only popping into a shop. Don’t leave items on display. You may think that the few pence you’ve left out isn’t worth taking but anything can prove to be temptation for a thief.

“Remove valuables from the car and get rid of any signs – such as suction marks on the windscreen or MP3 cables – that show that valuables have been in the car as a thief may assume you have stored them in the glove box.”

Call police on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
