'Legs' star turns nasty for panto

Drag star Betty 'Legs' Diamond is set to turn "nasty" as she prepares for this year's Preston pantomime.

The alter-ego of 45-year-old Simon Green joins an all-star cast for Cinderella at the Charter Theatre.

The show includes comedian and Radio Lancashire presenter Ted Robbins, who is also directing the show, and sci-fi actor Gareth David-Lloyd who plays Ianto Jones in Doctor Who.

It will be the first time the Charter Theatre will produce the pantomime in-house since it opened in 1972 and there will also be a live band.

Betty, who stars and choreographs shows at Blackpool's Funny Girls club, will be playing an ugly sister.

Betty said: "Being someone so gorgeous, I jumped at the chance of playing someone ugly and nasty.

"It will be similar to what I do usually but it's more on the fun side – it's all slapstick fun with outrageous costumes.

"I have got a cupboard full of a lot of sequins and feathers."

Paul Humphreys, publicity officer for the Charter Theatre, said: "To have Ted Robbins on board and also as the director is a bit of a coup given the extent of his experience.

"Betty 'Legs' Diamond has been pretty much exclusive to Blackpool for the last 15 years so to have Betty in our pantomime is really exciting."

The show, being produced by the Guild Hall's general manager Chris Haylett, also stars Radio Lancashire lunchtime presenter Sally Naden as the Fairy Godmother and Fifi of the Flowertots, will be the Flowertot Fairy.

Shameless and Coronation Street actress Jodie Hamblet stars as Cinderella.

It runs from December 8 until January 3.
