Increase in deaths in workplace
Latest news on lep.co.uk
One person has died and 83 have suffered serious injuries at work in Preston over the past year.
The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has issued a safety warning to employers after releasing new figures which show the number of people killed across Lancashire has nearly trebled this year.
In Lancashire eight people were killed this year compared to three the previous year, while ‘major injuries’ dropped to 661 this year, from 716 the previous year.
A further 2,404 workers suffered an injury or ill-health which required them to take at least three days off work this year compared to 2,471 last year.
David Sowerby, HSE’s regional director for the North West, said: “The families of the eight workers in Lancashire who lost their lives last year had to face Christmas without them.
“Hundreds of other workers have had their lives changed forever by a major injury.
“Employers should spend their time tackling the real dangers that workers face rather than worrying about trivial risks or pointless paperwork.”
