Heroes named on memorial stone almost 100 years after they died

The names of 25 war heroes from Chorley have finally been added to a memorial in the town - nearly 100 years after they died.

The men were all from the Whittle-le-Woods and Clayton-le-Woods area but their names were never added to the borough's memorial in Factory Lane, Whittle.

Now, thanks to the efforts of Coun Eric Bell, chairman of the Clayton-le-Woods and Whittle-le-Woods Memorial Committee, they've now been included at a cost of more than 1,500.

Among those featured was 19-year-old Stanley Clitheroe who died in June 1915 and his father John Clitheroe, aged 52, who died a year later.

Also on the list was Harold Bamber, George Beardsworth, Gerald Bennett, Peter Bibby, Henry Bennett, Thomas Chadwick, William Cooper, William Derbyshire, Thomas DeSoer, Thomas Fishwick, John Eccles, Thomas Wilkinson, J.S.T Wane, Charles Gillett, Christopher Heap, George Sharrock, William Jones, George Riding, Jack Sharples, Daniel Slater, William Suter, William Walmesley and Thomas Waring.

Coun Bell said: "They were all Whittle lads and most of them died in World War One. We always read the names at services but they were never on the monument.

"We don't know whey the names were missed off. We can only think that the authorities at the time couldn't contact their families.

"The missing names have now been carved on to a piece of stone and added to the monument.

"It is nice to see that they are finally going to be there for people to see how they fought for their country."
