Giant hailstones could be heading Lancashire’s way as the school summer holidays arrive with a severe weather warning for tomorrow.

The Met Office has forecast abnormal conditions for the county – although the “yellow” alert comes with a degree of uncertainty.

Forecasters say the heatwave which has been building this week could erupt in spectacular fashion with violent thunderstorms hitting the region. Despite the high temperatures – still around 24C tomorrow – the storms could bring showers of “large” hailstones which could prove a hazard to drivers.

Torrential downpours are predicted across the region, although experts admit they are unsure exactly where or when they will strike.

Lancashire is set for temperatures in the 20s throughout next week.

The Canal and River Trust is reminding people not to cool off in waterways as temperatures soar.
