A shoplifter assaulted a security guard after he was caught red handed stealing goods from a DIY store.

Matthew Snape, of Leyland Lane, Leyland, is already in prison serving a sentence for thefts, Preston magistrates heard.

The 29-year-old appeared by video link from HMP Preston after admitting assaulting worker Raja Rehman on May 26 this year at the B and Q store in Bamber Bridge, near Preston.

Prosecuting, Phillippa Jones said: “The assault arises as a result of Mr Snape having been detained by security at B and Q.

“He was detained after an incident of shoplifting and taken back into the store.

“He’s produced a number of items that have been taken from the store and does supply security with his details.

“However, he does take an opportunity of leaving the store and he does that by pushing Mr Rehman to the chest area with both hands.

“As a result he has been able to leave.

She added: “Mr Rehman clutched at a metal storage cage and other staff tried to detain Mr Snape but given his violent nature they released him and he made off.”

The court heard on July 16 he admitted a string of thefts and was jailed.

For the assault, the bench at Preston Magistrates Court gave him a conditional discharge for 12 months.
