Garages help drive down crime
Police in Burnley have joined forces with two local garages to reduce crime.
Apex garage, on Reynolds Street, and D&D motors, on Marlborough Street, have agreed to fit tamper-proof screws for free to anyone visiting them for an MOT, service or repair.
The screws make it more difficult for thieves to steal registration numbers, which they then use to commit crime such as drive offs from petrol stations.
PCSO Karen Lonsdale said: “Overall, car crime levels are low across Burnley but recently we’ve had an increase in number plate thefts.
“We’ve been fitting the screws to hundreds of cars at various events over the past 12 months but getting local garages to support us is a fantastic step forward.
“It means that many more motorists can benefit from the tamper-proof screws. We hope to roll this initiative out across the borough and will be speaking to garages to encourage them to sign up to the scheme.”
Any garages wishing to join the initiative can contact either PCSO Lonsdale or PCSO Dave Johnson on 101.
