A teacher from a prestigious Lancashire grammar school who indecently assaulted three pupils on youth hostelling trips in the 1970s has been jailed for three years.

Retired John Mead, 76, claimed he was a victim of the Jimmy Savile effect after being convicted of assaulting the boys in dormitories and showers on trips he had arranged.

But Judge Christopher Cornwall, sentencing, dismissed Mead’s claims telling the court Mead’s victims complained about their former teacher several years before Savile died and his vile offending was revealed.
