Football on tour for hospice kids

A group of Preston university students will pedal, walk and cruise their way around 15 football grounds.

Luke Gale, 21, from Walton-le-Dale, and three university friends will visit the clubs in three days and can use any type of transport except a car, no more than twice.

Luke, who studies Sports Management at the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan), came up with the idea for the events management module of their degree to raise money for Derian House Children's Hospice, Chorley.

He will set off on February 2with fellow UCLan students Daniel Gardner, 22, from Lostock Hall; Sam Haydock, 21, from Hoghton; and Daniel Catlow, 21, who is from Blackburn but lives in Preston.

He said: "We have to plan and organise an event for charity and we were told which charity to do it for.

"We are all football fans. and we have pretty much got it planned out.

"There are only one or two places that we are waiting to hear back from and if we don't we are going to have to walk it."

They will first cycle from Blackpool FC's ground to Preston North End's Deepdale, then head on to Riley Green to board a canal boat to Blackburn's Ewood Park.

They will then travel to Accrington Stanley before ending day one at Burnley FC.

After staying the night at Daniel Catlow's family home, they will head to Stockport County, Oldham Athletic, Rochdale, Bury FC, Manchester City and Manchester United before staying at a friend's.

Their final day will see them visit Bolton Wanderers, Wigan Athletic, Everton FC and finally Liverpool FC. Luke, who supports PNE, said: "We were actually discussing it last night and we think we have under-estimated the size of what we have set ourselves.

"The bike ride will take it out of us straight away."

The group was sponsored 250 by Liquid Plastics, Miller Street, Preston, and also received free travel from Northern Rail, First Bus and Boat Cruises of Riley Green.

Most clubs have donated a piece of signed memorabilia to be auctioned off at a special gala evening on March 5.
