Sixteen men have appeared in court charged with offences relating to disorder at Preston North End’s Capital One Cup clash with Blackpool last year.
The men face a number of charges of affray, section four public order offences and a single count of assault occasioning actual bodily harm (ABH) after an investigation was launched following the disturbance.
Following the match, police said supporters were caught up in a number of scuffles, the stadium was damaged, a steward was knocked over by a police horse and there was further trouble in the city centre.
Around 200 fans ran onto the pitch at the end of the match which saw PNE win 1-0 against Blackpool in August.
David Hough, 38, of Normandy Road, Woodplumpton; Christopher Donnelly, 19, of Levensgarth Avenue, Fulwood; Benjamin Shaw, 21, of Barnfield, Kirkham; Adam Hulme, 23, of Lindon Grove, Ribbleton and David Lewis, 43, of Ashworth Grove, Preston, deny affray. Lewis also denies assaulting match steward Alan Entwistle causing him actual bodily harm.
The cases against Andrew Duffy, 35, of De Lacy Street, Ashton; Kieran Dunne, 37, of Sylvancroft, Ingol; Daniel Brown, 19, of The Dingle, Fulwood; Justin Nixon, 41, of Canon Hill, Ashton; Christopher Tucker, 33, of Mayfield Avenue, Lancaster; Marlon Cross, 28, of Sheephill Brow, Clayton-le-Woods; Wesley Howson, 25, of Well Orchard, Bamber Bridge; Anthony Smalley, 29, of Troutbeck Place, Ribbleton; Thomas Malkin, 31, of Winsfell View, Morecambe, and two youths who cannot be identified, have been adjourned to a future hearing.
The men appeared at Preston Crown Court where trials will be held on September 15 and October 8. All the defendants have been granted bail but a number of the men asked the judge to consider lifting a bail condition which bans them from going within 1,000m of any football ground ahead of the season’s play-offs.
Judge Andrew Woolman will consider the applications and make a ruling at the next hearing on May 30. However he did not confirm whether a decision will be made in time for the season’s play-offs.
